Tailscale Remote Access

Last updated: May 2026

What is Tailscale Remote Access?

Flap Unraid integrates Tailscale to let you securely reach your Unraid server from anywhere — even outside your home network — without opening firewall ports or configuring port forwarding.

When enabled, the app joins your Tailscale network as a private node and connects directly to your server using an encrypted peer-to-peer connection. No traffic passes through our servers.

How It Works

01
Install on Server

Install the Tailscale plugin on your Unraid server and log in to your Tailscale account.

02
Enable in App

Toggle Tailscale in the Flap Unraid app and authorize it with your Tailscale account.

03
Connect Anywhere

Access your server from any network — mobile, cellular, or abroad — with end-to-end encryption.

Before You Begin

  • A free Tailscale account. The free plan supports up to 3 users and 100 devices — more than enough for home use.
  • Unraid 6.10 or later with Community Applications (App Store) plugin installed.
  • Flap Unraid app version 1.0.1 or later with a Pro subscription.

Part 1

Set Up Tailscale on Your Unraid Server

  1. 1
    Open Community Applications

In the Unraid web UI, go to the Apps tab (Community Applications). Search for Tailscale.

  2. 2
    Install the Tailscale Plugin

Click Install on the Tailscale plugin. After installation, it will appear under Settings → Tailscale.

  3. 3
    Log In to Tailscale

Go to Settings → Tailscale, click Connect, and follow the link to authenticate with your Tailscale account. Your server will appear in the Tailscale admin console as a new device.

  4. 4
    Note the Tailscale IP

Once connected, your server is assigned a Tailscale IP starting with 100.x.x.x. You can find it in Settings → Tailscale or in the Tailscale admin console.

Part 2

Enable Tailscale in Flap Unraid

  1. 1
    Generate an Auth Key

In the Tailscale admin console, go to Settings → Keys and click Generate auth key. Enable Reusable and optionally Ephemeral (recommended for mobile). Copy the generated key.

  2. 2
Open Server Settings in Flap Unraid

In Flap Unraid, tap the More tab, then select your server to open its settings.

  3. 3
    Enter the Auth Key

Toggle on Tailscale Remote Access and paste the auth key into the field. The app joins your tailnet as a private node and will appear in the Tailscale admin console under Machines.

  4. 4
    Connect with Tailscale IP

Update your server's host in Flap Unraid to the Tailscale IP (100.x.x.x). The app will now route through Tailscale automatically whenever you're outside your home network.

Tips & Notes

  • Tailscale uses end-to-end WireGuard encryption. Your data is never decrypted on Tailscale's servers.
  • No firewall rules or port forwarding required. Tailscale handles NAT traversal automatically.
  • Tailscale's free plan is sufficient for personal use. See tailscale.com/pricing for details.
  • Tailscale Remote Access is a Pro feature in Flap Unraid and requires an active Pro subscription.

Troubleshooting

The app can't connect after enabling Tailscale
Make sure both your phone and server appear as Connected in the Tailscale admin console. Check that you're using the server's Tailscale IP (100.x.x.x) as the host in Flap Unraid. Try disabling and re-enabling Tailscale in the app.
My phone doesn't appear in the Tailscale admin console
Re-open the Tailscale settings in Flap Unraid and tap Re-authenticate. Make sure you complete the browser login. If machine authorization is required in your tailnet settings, approve the device in the admin console.
Connection is slow over Tailscale
Tailscale prefers direct peer-to-peer connections. If it falls back to a relay (DERP), speed may be reduced. Ensure both devices are not behind overly restrictive firewalls. You can check connection status in the Tailscale admin console under the Machines tab.
